Food Drive in December was a Success

Full Circle Veterinary Care sponsored a Food Drive during the entire month of December 2011 to benefit the Humane Society of Weld County.

For every pound of dog or cat food that was donated, Full Circle Veterinary Care matched the donation.  Three hundred pounds of dog and cat food were provided to the Humane Society of Weld County.  They appreciated the donation, and we thank all of you that brought in food to donate.

February is Dental Health Month

According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have signs of periodontal disease by age three.  Not only can this disease cause pain and tooth and bone loss, the resulting bacterial infections can enter the bloodstream, then spread throughout the body and cause permanent damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver.

Some of the symptoms of dental problems in dogs and cats include:
-  bad breath
-  yellow teeth and/or a yellowish crust along the gum line
-  red, swollen or bleeding gums
-  pain which often appears to be a decreased appetite or difficulty eating resulting in weight loss
-  nasal discharge or tearing from an eye

Prevention is safer and far less costly than treating this disease, so please consider a dental checkup for your pet.  A dental cleaning allows us to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line, and also to give your pet a complete oral exam.  We can explain how home dental care between professional cleanings will help to keep your pet's mouth cleaner, longer.

Full Circle Veterinary Care is offering a 10% discount on pet dental cleanings that are scheduled during the month of February if you say you saw it in this newsletter.  Check with us soon by calling 970-587-5140. Limit one per family; cannot be combined with any other offers.

Cats Need Health Care, Too

Vaccinations
Is your cat on a proper vaccination program?  All of our pets have different needs and lifestyles, so no one vaccination program is right for every cat.  Choices must be made based on age, overall health and risk of exposure to disease.

Feline viral rhinotracheitis and calicivirus are viruses that cause respiratory disease in cats.  Virus particles are easily spread from cat to cat by sneezing or coughing.

Feline panleukopenia, many times called "feline distemper", can affect cats of any age.  Infected virus particles can be carried home on your clothing exposing your cat even if they never went outside.

Rabies virus can infect all warm-blooded animals, including humans.  The virus attacks nervous tissue and once signs are seen, the disease is fatal.  In humans, treatment started in the early stages of the disease can be lifesaving, but treatment is costly and unpleasant.  Cats, indoors or out, must be vaccinated.  Once an animal reaches adulthood, a rabies vaccine can be given annually.  Many other vaccines are available for your cat.  Based on your cat's particular needs, other recommendations may be made.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

from all of us at Full Circle Veterinary Care.  Be sure to keep your chocolate treasures away from your pets during this delectable holiday, as chocolate is potentially fatal for pets.  Chocolate contains a naturally occurring compound called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats.  The symptoms of theobromine poisoning begin with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, increased urination and incontinence, and can progress to cardiac arrhythmais, seizures and even death.

No Interest Payment Plans are Available!

With the holidays approaching, you might want the convenience of a monthly payment plan.  There is a program called CareCredit that is similar to your credit card.  It is a convenient, low minimum monthly payment program to help you accept the best treatment recommendation for your pets.  No annual fees and No Interest Payment Plans are available.  Give us a call or stop by the clinic for more information.

Do You Know About Pet Insurance?

It's becoming more popular to have insurance for your pet. Give us a call or stop by the clinic for more information.

Please let us know if we can help you and your pet with our products and services.

Sincerely,

Rachel Mahoney
